Equi Magic Drill Team

Equi Magic Drill team is the equestrian type of drill team where the riders compete with other teams thru competitive horse and rider patterns in the arena. Equi Magic was started 3 years ago by Jessica Jones (Raines) and the coach Kelley Clark who wanted to start a drill team teaching the rider’s basic skills/techniques that would help them control and work with their horses. Kelley volunteers her time to teach and hopes that her knowledge will help each rider as they progress with their own riding skills.

During the winter season, the team does meet but at a minimum. Once the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, the team will begin learning routines to perform during Christmas parades. The last two years, Equi Magic has won the Wister parade contest and during the 2006 Poteau parade, they placed third. After the holidays, the drill team starts to work on many larger routines. These routines will be performed in larger parades, rodeos and other competitions.

The biggest competition each year that is held in Canton, Texas during June is the drill teams’ largest event. This competition is very large because it is a National competition with many drill teams competing. Anyone who joins the team is asked to participate in this competition. Last year the drill team won 6th place in the event they entered, but this year they won 2nd, 4th and 9th in 3 different divisions.

At the end of August the team will hold their new annual meeting at Heavener’s Mazzio Pizza and will then hand out their membership applications, elect new officers and discuss the drill team in general. This meeting is open to anyone who wants to join and will be posted on the Heavener Chamber’s web page and newspapers.

Equi Magic is a team effort and is just like any other sport where the team works hard and each member is responsible to the team in their efforts. Equi Magic would like to welcome anyone who would like to join their team and learn various riding skills. The only requirement of Equi Magic is that each rider who joins is committed as a rider, will participate as a team member and treat Equi Magic as a team.

To join the team you may call Kelley Clark @ 385-1497 or Bobette Guillory @ 658-5646.
